First-Time Botox: What to Expect Before, During, and After

Your First Botox Treatment: Everything You Need to Know

Botox is the most popular cosmetic treatment in the United States — over 7 million procedures performed each year. Yet for first-time patients at our Mediversity clinic in Turnersville, NJ, it is still natural to feel nervous. This guide walks you through the complete experience so you arrive prepared and confident.

Before Your Appointment

Consultation

Your treatment begins with a consultation with one of our physicians. We will discuss:

  • Your aesthetic concerns and goals
  • Your medical history and current medications
  • Realistic expectations for treatment outcomes
  • Treatment areas, dosing recommendations, and cost

What to Avoid Before Treatment

  • Blood thinners for 5–7 days prior: Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and fish oil supplements unless prescribed by your doctor — these increase bruising risk
  • Alcohol for 24 hours prior: Also increases bruising risk
  • Vitamin E supplements: Similarly thin the blood
  • Retinol and harsh skin products: Avoid 1–2 days before injection

Come to your appointment with a clean face, free of heavy makeup.

During Your Botox Appointment

The Procedure (10–15 Minutes)

Botox injections are quick — most patients are in and out within 15–30 minutes including consultation. Here is what happens:

  1. Your physician cleans the treatment areas
  2. They mark the injection points based on your facial anatomy
  3. A very fine needle is used to deliver small amounts of Botox into targeted muscles
  4. You may feel a brief pinch at each injection point — most patients describe this as mild

A topical numbing cream is not typically needed, though we can provide it for patients who are anxious about discomfort.

How Many Injections Will You Get?

The number of injection points depends on the treatment area:

  • Forehead: typically 4–8 points
  • Frown lines (11s): 5 points is standard
  • Crow’s feet: 2–4 points per side

After Your Botox Treatment

Immediate Aftercare (First 4–6 Hours)

  • Do not rub or massage the treated areas
  • Stay upright — avoid lying flat for at least 4 hours
  • Skip exercise, saunas, and hot yoga for 24 hours
  • You can apply makeup after 1 hour if needed, gently

What You Will See

  • Day 1: Small bumps at injection sites are normal — they disappear within 20–30 minutes
  • Days 1–3: Mild swelling or redness at injection sites, which resolves quickly
  • Days 2–5: Results begin appearing as muscles start to relax
  • Week 2: Full effect is visible — this is the time to assess your results

Possible Side Effects

  • Bruising: Common and temporary, typically resolves in 5–7 days
  • Headache: Occasional, usually mild and resolves within 24–48 hours
  • Drooping eyelid (ptosis): Rare — occurs in less than 1% of treatments when toxin migrates. Always resolves as the product wears off

First-Time Results: Managing Expectations

First-time Botox patients sometimes notice their results look very subtle at first — you may not see the dramatic difference you expected. This is normal for two reasons: the muscles need time to fully relax, and starting with a conservative dose is standard practice to allow for natural facial movement. Your follow-up appointment at 2 weeks allows us to assess and touch up if needed.
